ECVC expresses its deep solidarity with Ukrainian people and calls for human rights to be respected

European Coordination Via Campesina, as a European grassroots organisation that currently brings togetehr 31 national and regional organisations of farmers, agricultural workers and rural people based in 21 European countries, expresses its deepest solidarity with the Ukrainian people and calls for the strict respect of human rights.

We call for an immediate halt to the military action.

In recent weeks, we have followed with great concern the increase in tension in the region, where rural populations have found themselves on the front line, voiceless and completely vulnerable. In any war, the civilian population, and in particular the rural population, are the first and most invisible victims. Our sisters and brothers in Ukraine are now under bombardment, trapped in a conflict between superpowers.

Europe has suffered too much from these divisions in the past. Today, we no longer want to be pawns in the hands of a geostrategic game that has no regard for the interests of the people. We want peace and democracy. We want to be able to decide for ourselves, with food sovereignty being an essential element of this right to self-determination.

ECVC stands for internationalist values. As such, solidarity with oppressed rural populations, under the impact of war, economic violence or resource grabbing, is fundamental to us. Already, tens of thousands of refugees are fleeing the Ukraine to neighbouring countries. We will participate wherever we can to promote and organise a dignified reception of these refugees. We call on the European Union to provide any means necessary to take in the refugees that the war is already generating.

We call on our member organisations and allies to raise their voices and show their solidarity to demand an end to the war and to find diplomatic solutions to restablish peace in the region. We stand with the peasants and other people living in rural and urban areas in Ukraine, who continue to resist in defence of human rights.

Land for food, not for bombing! Peasants united for peace! Peace in Ukraine!
